BigBand Networks Releases Version 6.0 Of BigBand Cuda CMTS

January 3, 2006

DOCSIS 2.0 qualified platform designed for delivery of real-time voice and video services

Redwood City, Calif. -
BigBand Networks, Inc., a leading provider of broadband multimedia infrastructure for video, voice and data, today announced that it has released version 6.0 of its BigBand CudaŽ CMTS (cable modem termination system). This version is currently available and can be installed on existing Cuda deployments by software upgrade. Version 6.0 incorporates a suite of features designed to improve delivery of real-time services such as VoIP and IPTV. These features include support for hitless software upgrades that maintain service sessions through deployment modification, enhancement of integrated redundant elements with rapid failover time, standards-based integration with multimedia services, and robust signal delivery both upstream and downstream in multiple plant conditions.

"Cable operators are constantly broadening their offerings, such as current rapid VoIP expansion, in progress towards realization of next generation network visions that leverage IP and DOCSIS technologies for myriad applications," said John Connelly, BigBand Networks' executive vice president of marketing and business development. "Designed to maximize reliability of subscribers' real-time voice and video sessions, Cuda version 6.0 illustrates BigBand Networks' commitment to working with our customers on evolving towards more intelligent networks capable of providing all media."

The BigBand Cuda CMTS has multiple qualifications to support advanced media and services including DOCSIS 2.0, DSG (DOCSIS Set-top Gateway) and PacketCable. The platform is in use for VoIP from multiple leading operators including Cox Communications, Millennium Broadband and Multikabel of the Netherlands.

Elements of Cuda version 6.0 designed to optimize delivery of real-time IP voice and video services include:

  • Robust operation in multiple RF plant environments with pre-equalization, post-equalization and ingress noise cancellation to enhance QAM performance;
  • DOCSIS 2.0 for enhanced noise tolerance in the upstream using either A-TDMA or S-CDMA physical access;
  • Open integration across multiple media, services and partner vendors based on standards such as PacketCable Multimedia and Advanced DSG (DOCSIS Set-top Gateway);
  • Dynamic load balancing with channel changing for hitless modem tuning to expand upstream and downstream access in order to accommodate high-bandwidth sessions;
  • IPDR (Internet Protocol Data Record) interface for high capacity performance analysis and session data integration with billing and maintenance information systems;
  • Hitless software upgrades from prior Cuda releases for constant service availability; and
  • Hitless failover for multiple system components including route topology.
Highlighting many elements of the features of Cuda Release 6.0, BigBand Networks will conduct a Webinar about "Optimizing Broadband Infrastructure for Real-Time Voice and Video Services" on Tuesday February 7 at 3:00 PM Eastern time. For registration, visit www.bigbandnet.com/WebinarRegister.
