September 16, 2009

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., — BigBand Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: BBND), a leader in digital video networking, today announced that Time Warner Cable (TWC) will be deploying BigBand's Switched Digital Video (SDV) solution to offer new programming options in the cable operator's Los Angeles, New York City and Dallas systems.

"We have launched SDV in over 20 markets to date and know firsthand that, if we want to deploy new programming options for our customers, SDV is the fastest, most cost effective method for our existing network," said Kevin Leddy, Time Warner Cable's executive vice president of technology policy and product management. "With the bandwidth that has been reclaimed Time Warner Cable is able to offer over 100 high definition channels to our customers and can launch such services as DOCSIS® 3.0 and HD Video on Demand.  We can do these things with the confidence that the BigBand solution is giving us the reliability and high level of performance we have come to expect."

"Time Warner Cable has been a trusted strategic partner since the first deployment of SDV. They immediately saw that bandwidth expansion was just the first of many benefits that it can bring to a network," said Amir Bassan-Eskenazi, BigBand's president and CEO. "As part of our recently announced CVEx software platform, our SDV solution is built to accommodate the exploding demand for video services and personalized content in an economical and evolutionary approach."

BigBand SDV has been deployed, or is being deployed, by seven of the top 10 service providers in North America. The company's SDV solution helps service providers optimize the network spectrum needed for bandwidth-intensive services such as HDTV and long-tail content. The SDV solution is designed to provide a path to personalized television services by migrating seamlessly from multicast to ultimately individualized, unicast delivery. BigBand's SDV is part of the company's broader approach to helping service providers achieve a converged network for video delivery as part of the Converged Video Exchange (CVEx™) software platform, which is designed to unify the way that service providers deliver and manage linear and non-linear video services across the network edge, to traditional MPEG set-top boxes and next generation IP devices.
