Conserve Bandwidth Where You Need It Most

Smart channel multiplexing tools provide an effective technique to accommodate the growth of HDTV and other bandwidth-intensive services without embarking upon more expensive plant and subscriber premises alterations. Applied alongside other techniques and services, the capabilities of smart multiplexing tools can eventually achieve even greater gains in efficiency and functionality.

On the BigBand BMR®, output multiplexes are RateShaped using a sophisticated process involving digital signal processing and statistical multiplexing. The result is that up to 16 programs can be transported in a single QAM signal at 38.8Mb/s. The BMR provides a visual reference of the bandwidth allocated to each program in the stream on a real time basis. With RateShaping bandwidth is conserved by allocating more bandwidth to programs that need more and less to programs needing less.

RateShaping with the Element Manager

For applications where a CBR (constant bit rate) is desirable, such as switched digital video services, RateClamping converts variable input feeds into RateClamped CBR streams with the output bandwidth determined by the MSO for a particular application. Services such as VOD and nPVR (network personal video recorder) utilize clamped video feeds in most implementations.
